Are smooth bore slugs accurate?

Are smooth bore slugs accurate?

To 75 yards they have become extremely accurate. At 100 yards they usually print 3″-4″ groups but the K.O., like any smoothbore slug, often loses stability somewhere between 75 and 100 yards and one may tumble far off target.

Do rifled slugs work in smooth bore?

Rifled slugs are designed for use in smooth bore barrels. I shot my first deer with a winchester rifled slug out of a 28″ smooth bore barrel. Actually, all the deer I’ve shot with a shotgun have been with rifled slugs from a smoothbore barrel.

Are rifled slugs accurate?

Rifled slugs do cause the projectile to spin, but it’s not enough to create a noticeable gain in accuracy. It’s commonly assumed that because rifled slugs have angled grooves (and because the word “rifle” is in the name) they create the same type of spin that makes rifling so accurate. This is simply not true.

Can you shoot a slug through a smooth bore shotgun?

Yes, you can shoot a rifled slug through a smooth bore barrel, but a sabot slug would have to be shot out of a rifled slug barrel as the sabot slugs are much like a rifle bullet and don’t have the rifling on the projectile itself like a rifled slug does.

Can you shoot a slug through a smooth bore?

All but the plain “unrifled slug” are designed and intended to be shot out of Modified Chokes and some will actually permanently damage a Full Choke barrel. The plain slug can be shot out of either a smoothbore or rifled shotgun barrel, with the latter giving much more accuracy.

What kind of slugs are good for a rifle?

Breneke slugs are also excellent. Rifled slugs are also called fostner slugs. On saboted slugs designed for rifled barrels, I have had good luck with lightfield hybrid EXP, Remmington solid copper (light recoil), and hornady SST.

Why does my gun explode when I shoot sabot slugs?

Your gun won’t explode if you end up shooting sabot slugs out of a smooth bore barrel or, vice versa, if you shoot rifled slugs out of a rifled barrel. It just won’t be accurate. Your groupings will be all over the place because if you use the wrong type of slug, it could end up just tumbling end over end because it doesn’t have the proper spin.

Can a rifled slug be shot through a full choke?

Cylinder or Improved Cylinder are the way to go with rifled slugs, don’t shoot them through a Modified or Full choke especially in fixed choke configurations. Lol that was what I was thinking. If the slug is rifled the barrel shouldn’t be rifled.
