## Why must an ammeter be connected in series and a voltmeter in parallel in a circuit?

A voltmeter has high resistance and if it is connected in series then it would consume all the current but an ammeter has low reistance and if it is connected in parallel then all the current would flow through ammeter and nothing would flow in the circuit .

## Why is an ammeter connected in series in a circuit Why should it have a low resistance?

Since in series connection, current remains constant. We know from Ohms law that V=IR, or I=VR, clearly more the resistance of the ammeter, less the current which flows through the ammeter. Hence in order to measure the maximum current in the circuit, the ammeter must have low or negligible resistance.

## Why is a voltmeter connected in parallel across a circuit element?

Voltmeter has high resistance. Therefore, the voltmeter is always connected in parallel so that the voltage of the circuit does not change when it gets connnected. Since the ratio of voltage and current for different readings is same so Ohm’s law is valid to high accuracy.

## What if ammeter has high resistance?

An ammeter is a device used to measure the amount of current flowing in a circuit. Hence, it’s resistance adds to the total resistance of the circuit. If the resistance of the ammeter would be high, the total resistance would be high. This would decrease the amount of current flowing through the circuit.

## Why do we connect galvanometer in series?

A shunt resistance should be connected in parallel to the galvanometer so as to keep its resistance low. Such low resistance galvanometer ( ammeter) is used in series with the circuit to measure the strength of current through the circuit.

## Why is an ammeter always connected in series and a?

An ammeter is connected in series with the circuit because the purpose of the ammeter is to measure the current through the circuit. Since the ammeter is a low impedance device, connecting it in parallel with the circuit would cause a short circuit, damaging the ammeter and/or…

## How are ammeters connected in a circuit and in a resistor?

The ammeters are connected in series with batteries and a resistor. An ammeter is used to measure the current in a circuit. you would attach it differently from a voltmeter by attaching it in series with the circuit rather than in parallel.
