Mell What is the serial number of a Sterlingworth 12 gauge?
I currantly have five recorded from 376996 to 377119. I have quite a few 12-gauge “flatside” Fox-Sterlingworths recorded in the 132xxx range (with one regular frame right in the middle), one in the 138xxx range, and some right near the end in the 1613xx range. The gun I have has a small oval on the barrels below the serial number with “SP” inside.

The serial #119645 is stamped on all of the parts, even the trigger guard. It was manufactured by A.H. fox co. in phila, pa. Its a 12 gauge standard grade (I think) , looks to be a good shape except for the stock which is scratched; the barrel has “fluid compressed steel” stamped on it.

The current market is depressed due to the current economy. The prices for the 12ga Sterlingworths are at an all time low (same can be said for Parkers etc.). The last 12ga Sterlingworth I purchased (6 months ago) inexcellent condition with #4 weight barrels, 28″ M/F was a mere $650.

You will find a date code stamped on every shotgun & rifle/shotgun in the Savage/Stevens brands produced between March 1949 and December 1968. Usually, it is behind the hinge pin on the barrel (s) or ahead of the trigger guard on the bottom of the frame. It will sometimes appear as a small circle containing a number and a letter.

The letter “Q” by itself. The letter “R” by itself. Then there is a “12V” in an oval. On the opposite side of the breach area is an “I” by itself, and a heart symbol. Westfield, MASS, USA… Patent…… There is a “20V” in an oval on this barrel. It is very clear, I made no mistake. Can someone help me determine the date of manufacture?
